Watch the progress of dd in linux

Using dd to copy data is great.  Still, having no indication of progress is a pain!

Start by setting off your copy...

[root@fs02 ~]# dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=65536 conv=noerror,sync& pid=$!

And then in another terminal window...

[root@fs02 ~]# while true; do kill -USR1 $pid && sleep 1 && clear; done

Depending on the flavour of linux you have, you might need to opt for...

[root@fs02 ~]# while true; do kill -SIGUSR1 $pid && sleep 1 && clear; done
